On March 2nd, we are inviting clients, associates, and other interested parties to come learn about the ways technology is evening the playing field between small and large businesses. During the first hour we will be looking at how technology changes and specific technology companies are impacting the areas of marketing, sales, hiring, management, and finances. In each of these segments we will review example situations to outline how small businesses who are paying attention are gaining in their ability to compete with and challenge the bigger players. In the second hour we will open up the room for questions and discussion. We look forward to engaging in this conversation with all of you and encourage you to invite your colleagues. If you have not RSVP’ed yet, please contact Jamie Stanislav at jstanislav@greystonetech.com or 303.757.0779. Details are below.

I love this.

WordPress – the company that engineered the technology used for this blog and millions of others – experienced a major outage yesterday. As is typicaly with any widespread technical malfunction, this caused somewhat of an uproar by their clients and the followers of their clients’ blogs. The difference between this situation and most of the other malfunctions I have seen is evident if you follow the link above, read the blog post, and then read the comments. In the post, WordPress candidly acknowledges a major issue and doesn’t pass the buck. They are honest with their customers and understand that their customers are sharp enough to see through any well-crafted PR cover for the issue. The comments are amazing to me. Nearly every one of them is positive. I dare you to spend your day trying to find another blog entry or forum post online that has as much positive feedback as this one. Customers of WordPress – including many that pay for their VIP service – are amazingly quick to forgive on the sole basis that they appreciate the honesty and respect.

Welcome to the Greystone blog: Technology with a Purpose
February 15, 2010 by Peter Melby · Leave a Comment
I’ve always resisted becoming a blogger. I know it’s a popular thing to do and although there are many blogs I do follow, I don’t like the fact that our business and social culture seems to be transitioning rapidly towards the idea that speaking is more important than listening. Recently as we have evaluated our communication methods, it has become clear to me that starting a blog doesn’t necessarily require the level of self-assigned importance that I assumed. At Greystone we are constantly pushing each other and ourselves to listen and then listen more and by starting this blog we want to continue to develop our listening skills, share about what we are hearing, and create a venue for discussion with our clients, associates, and peers.
The name of this site: Technology with a Purpose, is a core value that we hold as a company. We provide technology related services, but the true value to our clients is the purpose that technology provides within their company. We work internally to continually refine our understanding of this. With the blog we are aiming to give a clearer view of Greystone from angles that many don’t have the opportunity to see. Every Friday morning our staff gets together to discuss a wide variety of topics. We use this time to discuss technical and non-technical obstacles we have encountered, to improve our customer service practices by discussing positive and negative real-world examples we have experienced, and to remind ourselves and each other that there is a lot more to what we do than just working with computers. Each meeting takes a shape of its own.
Our blog entries will follow similar threads. Each staff member will take time every month to share thoughts they feel are valuable to our clients, associates, and those interested in our world. Many of the entries will share tips regarding technology that we think are beneficial. Other entries will share our opinions on the current trends in technology and how business can get the most value. Some entries will have nothing to do with technology. We might not be the most polished writers or the best storytellers, but hopefully our blog will show what we are – sincere people striving to be better in all aspects of work and life.
We look forward to sharing what we are learning and getting feedback from those around us. We are excited about everything that is going on with Greystone and we invite you to be a part of it.
Thank you for stopping by.
Peter
